(PIR) "CENTRAL ASIA AND ITS NEIGHBORHOOD CONTEXT" 

The course is a general introduction to Central Asia’s history and politics and will provide a general interpretative framework (or, in some cases, to revise the most frequently used) for five of the main issues in the field of Central Asian studies: ethnic categorization of the population; Central Asian economy; the role of Islam in past and current political developments; the state structure and its functioning in the region; and the place of the Central Asian republics in world politics.

The seminar will focus on the background and development of the concept of human rights in post-communist societies.

We will analyze the concept of gender, develop an understanding of the ways in which institutions, processes and practices are gendered, and explore the analytical power of gender frameworks, that is, of looking through the gender lens.
