Course description

With the global rise of ethnic conflict since 1945, increasingly international intervention has focused on ended such conflict. In particular with the end of the cold war, International Organizations have re-oriented themselves to end such conflict. Nowhere else has such a variety of different strategies and organizations been involved in attempting to end conflict than in former Yugoslavia. The conflicts, often the result of ethnopolitical mobilization, have been the source of substantial international intervention, ranging from low-key missions of international organizations to fully-fledged protectorate. In addition, individual countries have been considerably involved both in the conflicts and in their resolution. As result examining international intervention in the region is not only crucial in understanding the recent history of former Yugoslavia, but also in analyzing lessons learned for third party intervention globally.

The purpose of the class is to familiarize students with different types of international/external intervention in former Yugoslavia. The classes will examine particular aspects of international intervention, both from a theoretical perspective, as well as based on the experience of the region from peacekeeping, military intervention to post-conflict reconstruction and EU integration.
