On October 5th, MIREES students class of 2007 defended their theses before a defense commission made up of 3 members: mentor, second reader and a chairperson.
The chairperson welcomed the student to defense and introduced the members in the commission to him/her. Then, the student's mentor introduced the commission to the research carried out by the student. The student was allowed 15 minutes to give a presentation on his/her work. A 35-minute debate followed student's presentation in which all members in the commission tested the ability of the student to defend the theses stated in his/her work. The student would then leave the room and the defense commission would agree on a grade to award the student for the defense performance only.
On October 5th a general assembly of all professor who took part in the defense commissions discussed students performance at defense, commented each case separately and assigned the final grade, which is made up on the basis of the weighted average of the grades the students were awarded during academic exams and the grade awarded at defense.
