Defense sessions take place once a year (normally at the beginning of October). By mid September the students who handed in their thesis according to the requirements listed in the "Regulations" of the Master's program are admitted to defense and will be notified the time and the set-up of his/her defense commission. As a general rule, the defense commission is made up of three members: the student's mentor, his/her second reader and a chairperson chosen among the MIREES or partner universities' teaching staff.
Students admitted to defense must prepare a power point presentation (and additional handouts to be distributed during the course of thesis defense) to use at defense session. The main purpose will be that of
Since the time allowed to the student to present his/her works is 15/20 minutes, the student should design the presentation accordingly.
When the defense session starts and the candidate is called into the room, the chairperson will introduce the candidate to his/her defense commission and provide general information on timing in the defense session.
The candidate will then be given the chance to present his/her work for 15/20 minutes. As soon the student is finished with his/her presentation or when the time allowed for the presentation is over, the chair of the defense commission will proceed either to question the candidate posing all the questions the candidate will then be asked to answer (in which case the candidate will take note of the questions and answer them in order) or to open a debate in which the candidate will mmediately reply to each question posed by the commission members. After a 30/35-minute debate the candidate is asked to leave the room (along with all people in the room aart from the commission members and MIREES assistants) and the defense commission will agree on a grade for the student's performance. The grade will not be made public until the graduation ceremony.
